“Young Writers: The People and Purposes That Influence Their Literacy”

A. Mindful- Writers of all ages are mindful when writing.

B. In the chapter, Young Writers: The People and Purposes That Influence Their Literacy, Hansen expresses how children who are just beginning to write are mindful of “what writers do” through observation. In the article, Hansen repeatedly writes “He knows, She Knows, knows.” She suggests that when children observe others writing, they begin to pick up knowledge of what writers do. For example Jessica “knows” writers create books with plots and begin their books with titles. First grader, Daniel “knows” chapters are a way to organize information. Paul “knows” writers present their messages in horizontal fashion and that their messages have a purpose. Kibi “knows” print carries meaning. Children begin to understand at an early age that there is a purpose in all writing whether it is knowing to write left to write or separate thoughts into chapters.

C. Children often use less complex sentence when they write than when they talk. What are some ways to encourage writing complex sentences? What could a teacher do to model this?

D. 1. Positive reinforcement 2. Having students share their writing 3. Model what “writers do”

Nicole's Thoughts on Defining Composition

Object Writing:

Imagine a Hat

This is a hat
No ordinary hat
A mischievous, obedient hat
A hat that is tall, a hat that is small
A hat that knows nothing, but all

This is a hat
An extraordinary hat
A chaotic, orderly hat
A hat that is smart, so dear to my heart
This is the hat of the Cat in the Hat
